I believe Singapore is a safe place for 自助旅行. In fact there are Taiwanese living in Sinagpore that provide homestay service.
They could provide with lot of tips travelling in Singapore.
Places you can visit in Sinagpore are (travelling by public transport is cheap & good; buses & MRT):
Sentosa, Botanic garden, Zoo, BirdPark, little indian, Orchard Road shopping mall or you can even visit the heartland HDB estate to see how normal Singaporean live
